LA Experiences Unprecedented High Temperatures Only One Week After Major Winter Storm.

After enduring torrential rains that caused flooding across parts of the city, LA is now seeing unseasonably hot weather for late February.

Record-Setting Temperatures

On Friday midday, the temperature climbed to 33 degrees Celsius (91 Fahrenheit) in downtown Los Angeles, according to the National Weather Service. This easily surpasses the old record for February 27th, which was 88°F (31°C) and was established just last year.

"Exceptionally warm weather" were highlighted on official maps for the region.

Safety Advisories

Forecasters stated that Friday's conditions posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for people sensitive to heat. Their recommendations suggested:

  • Keeping well-hydrated.
  • Limiting outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
  • Never leaving children or pets unattended in a hot car.

A Sharp Shift

This sharp rise in heat comes on the heels of a intense storm system that struck the area recently. That event brought heavy snow, strong winds, and thunderstorms to the mountains, leading to flash flood warnings for countless residents.

Sadly, the severe weather also resulted in a deadly avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.

Forecast Ahead

The outlook suggests a cooldown is coming. Readings were predicted to drop to around 16 degrees Celsius (61 Fahrenheit) in central Los Angeles by overnight.

Other locales that experienced 90°F were Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Meanwhile, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were projected to see the high 80s.

In the coming days, downtown LA can anticipate temperatures in the eighties, with a further cooldown likely for the following week.
