A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing these drugs must be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
